8th Grader Alex Steele Moves on to State Semifinals in National Geographic Bee

We have a star among us here at Heritage!

Our own 8th grader Alex Steele won the Heritage Christian Geography Bee back in December and took the qualifying test for the National Geographic Bee in January. As one of the top 100 scorers in the state of Iowa, Alex has been invited to compete in the 2013 Iowa National Geographic Bee at the DMACC campus in Ankeny, IA on Friday, April 5, 2013. He is the first Heritage student to advance to the semifinals in four years!

The state winner will receive $100, the “Complete National Geographic on DVD” and a trip to Washington D.C. to represent Iowa in the national finals at National Geographic headquarters, May 20-22, 2013.

The national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society as well an all expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands with one parent or guardian to encounter wildlife and landscape up close.

Those are some pretty wonderful prizes!

So how would you fare as a Bee contestant? At the school-level this year, students had to answer such questions as:

Q: From its source in Minnesota, the Mississippi River flows south about 2,300 miles before emptying into what large gulf?

A: Gulf of Mexico

Q: A subspecies of brown bear known as the Kodiak bear takes its common name from an island that lies off the southern coast of what state?

A: Alaska

Q: The Danakil Depression, located in part of the Great Rift Valley, is one of the lowest points on which continent?

A: Africa

Q: What is the term for the triangular deposit of sediment sometimes found at the mouth of a river – moraine or delta?

A: Delta

We will be cheering on Alex Steele for the Iowa semifinals Friday, April 5. Congratualations, Alex!
