Academics

At Heritage, we believe we are called to instruct students in the ways and truths of the Lord.

Our Areas of Study

With Scripture as a foundation, definite applications can be made to the students’ spiritual character, academic capabilities, and social convictions.

We hold Heritage students to high levels of excellence in all things, “as working unto the Lord, not for men.” The environment in which our students are taught is near the foundation of our pursuit of excellence. With class sizes smaller than public schools in the area, our dedicated staff have the ability to focus more attention on each student. Early elementary class sizes are even smaller, giving these young students a nurturing and individualized environment during their first few years in the classroom. Our outstanding Iowa Assessments scores show the competitive advantage of choosing the academically challenging education Heritage provides.

Bible

In order for our students to develop a Biblical worldview, they must know the contents of the Scripture and understand how to apply truth to their daily lives. By this, our students can sincerely carry out Jesus’ instructions in Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

History

The beginning of human history starts with God’s intentional act of creation described in Genesis 1:26-30 and Genesis 2:7-22. In order to hold a proper view of history, understanding must be based on knowing who God is as He has revealed Himself through creation, the person and work of Jesus Christ, and in the text of the Holy Bible.

Language

God established the use of language, both oral and written, as a means of revealing Himself to and fellowshipping with man. Being created in the image of God, man was given the use of language as a means to relate with his Maker and fellowship with other people.

Mathematics

The study of mathematics should lead man to see the beauty and importance of mathematics and to see how God has incorporated math into every part of His created universe.

Science

Like all other realms of knowledge, scientific understanding should have its rightful place in man’s life, a tool in the hand of a worker in full submission to the Master’s will.

Athletics and Cocurriculars

We believe that to develop and learn how to use one’s talents is an act of worship that is pleasing to the Lord, and we seek to instill that belief in our students. Offering several co-curricular opportunities in Athletics, P.E., Music and Art encourages our students to be well-rounded and expand their individual interests.

Our Core Values

To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. – Proverbs 1:2-4, 7 (ESV)

Accreditation

Heritage Christian School is accredited by The Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) which is recognized by the State of Iowa.

Why Accreditation Matters

Spiritual
  • ACSI accredited schools have remained the most theologically stable and consistent over the past five years.**
  • Christian school graduates are significantly more likely to pray and read Scripture both alone and with a spouse and children.*
  • ACSI accredited schools have these top priorities: for students to have a close, personal relationship with God and for students to develop a Christian worldview.**

*Protestant Christian schools compared with Catholic, public, and private nonreligious schools as well as homeschools
**ACSI accredited schools compared with other ACSI members, Protestant Christian schools, and Catholic schools

  • On average, ACSI accredited schools require more rigorous course loads in math, science, English, languages, civics, social studies, art or music, and Bible than all other programs surveyed.**
  • Since 1974 ACSI schools have scored significantly higher than the national norm in every grade level on a national achievement test.
  • ACSI school graduates attend college at a significantly higher rate than the national average (86 percent compared with 68 percent).

**ACSI accredited schools compared with other ACSI members, Protestant Christian schools, and Catholic schools

  • Christian school graduates give more of their time to volunteer in their congregations, on mission trips, and on relief/aid trips.*
  • Christian school graduates donate significantly more money to their churches, religious causes, and other charitable causes overall.*
