STRONG EFFORT UNTIL THE FINAL BUZZER

7/8th Girls Basketball

The Heritage Eagles girls team kicked the season off last week with two games. The first game was against INCA on Tuesday and the girls came out ready to complete. They played as a team and really put forth a great effort the entire game, but fell a bit short of a win. The second game of the week was against a very tall, talented and experienced Trinity team. The girls worked hard until the final buzzer, but ended up losing this game as well. The first two games are in the books, but the girls have great attitudes and are ready and eager to learn from the first two games and get back on the court. Go Eagles!

FIRST TWO GAMES OF THE SEASON: ONE WIN, ONE LOSS

7/8th Boys Basketball

The 7/8th grade Heritage boys basketball team started the season off with a win over INCA. From the start of the game, the Eagles dominated the Patriots winning by a 10 point margin. In their second game of the week, the Eagles battled hard against Trinity, but fell to the Trojans in the last minute. The Eagles want to thank all of the parents, teachers, and students who cheered for them during the games. The team feels very energized and encouraged by the support.

TOUGH LOSS TO END THE SEASON

5/6th and 7/8th Volleyball

On Thursday, October 22nd, the 5/6th grade volleyball team suffered a tough loss to the Trinity Trojans ending their season. The Trojans won the coin toss and elected to serve first, resulting in a quick lead. The Eagles battled back, not willing to give up. The lead went back and forth with each volley ending with the Trojans winning the first set 25 – 23.

The second set was just as competitive with numerous lead changes. Serving proved to be key, with Amala Akabogu, Lydia Jumper, Ella Hochstetler, Kalin Rotzoll, and Jaclyn Pitcher all serving up points for the Eagles. The set ended with a victory for the Eagles with a score 25 – 21. A third set would need to be played in order to determine the winner of the match. Although the Eagles played their best game of the season, the Trojans proved to be too strong of a competitor and won the third set 15 – 8. Thanks so much to our parents and fans, your support was very much appreciated throughout the entire season!

The 7/8th Grade Volleyball Team ended the year strong with some great sets against a strong volleyball team from Trinity Lutheran, Cedar Rapids on Thursday, October 22nd.  The Eagles had some intense volleying and some great saves, but ended up short during the match going 0-3.  The 7th-8th grade Volleyball Eagles had a GREAT season and are looking forward to showing off their skills against their parents and teachers on Tuesday, November 3rd!

VARSITY EAGLES FINALLY FALL

7/8th Soccer

Riding a 12 game winning streak dating back over the past three seasons and with night falling and literally seconds away from a second straight undefeated season, the Eagles gave up a stoppage time goal and fell to INCA 1-2. While outshooting INCA 5-1 and earning 6 corner kicks in the first half, Heritage found themselves down 0–1 at the break. A strong perimeter defense anchored by outside midfielders Sam Young and Caden Turnbough and outside backs Ebube Akabagou and Trey Montgomery and a stout defensive back line of Spencer Holman, Cael Austin and Ethan Bailey, Heritage kept INCA off the board for most of the second half. After winning an eighth corner kick, Caden Turnbough curled the free kick directly into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1. Furious Heritage attacks led by Maxx Miller, Hunter Schau, Adu Habte, and Sam and Eli Young saw shots on goal go wide, high, or off the woodwork and with seconds to play INCA found the back of the net on a well worked effort that led to their final goal.

Heritage finishes the season 3-2-1 (W-T-L). While falling short of a second undefeated season, Coach Montgomery and Coach Austin stressed the growth the team has made since the beginning of the season and their ability to learn how to play good team soccer over the course of the season. Over the past three seasons Heritage’s varsity soccer team is 12-3-3 and will look to continue their winning ways next season.

A huge thank you to all the parents, teachers, alumni and fans who made their way out to each of the matches this season, your support at each match was amazing and the encouragement it gave the players was much appreciated. Special thanks to departing 8th grade players Ebube Akabagou, Caden Turnbough, Levi Stultz, and AJ Coons! You guys were fun to coach and the encouragement you gave the younger players was a model of sportsmanship and Christian character for the rest of the team.

HISTORIC VICTORY, UNDEFEATED SEASON

5/6th Soccer

The HCS 5/6th soccer team made history with their victory over the INCA Patriots in the season finale. The Eagles beat the Patriots 3-1 and secured their place in the HCS record books as the only 5/6th team to finish the season without a loss.  Sam Young started the Eagles scoring assisted by an excellent cross from Hunter Schau.  The Patriot goalie appeared to make the save but was inside the goal as he gained control of the ball.  INCA rallied back to tie the game at 1-1. The Eagles maintained their poise and kept constant pressure on INCA during the first half with a total of 9 shots on goal.  Maxx Miller wrapped up the first half scoring and HCS went into half with a 2-1 lead.  Corey Holman continued his solid play in goal. The Eagles duo of Holman and Miller had a total of 8 saves during the game.  Miller added the final goal of the season to secure the historic victory.  The Eagles celebrated their win and undefeated season with a sprint to the parents/spectators sideline and a final “EAGLES ON 3, 1…2…3…EAGLES!!!” chant at midfield.

Again, the Eagles would like to thank the family/friends/HCS faculty for all of their support during the season!!

GO EAGLES!!

TWO TOUGH LOSSES AT HOME

5/6th Volleyball

The Heritage Eagle’s 5/6 girls volleyball teams suffered two heartbreaking losses at home this week.  On Tuesday the Eagles were matched up against the Isaac Newton Patriots.  The Eagles came out on fire! Amala Akabogu, Makala Hajek, Ella Hochstetler, Kalin Rotzoll, and Jaclyn Pitcher were extremely accurate with their serves, and catapulted the team to an early lead.  The Patriots were determined and fought themselves back into the game.  The Eagles were equally determined and thanks to outstanding teamwork won the first set 25 – 22.

In the second set, the Patriots served first which lead to their early lead.  Unfortunately, the Eagles couldn’t quite recover and in the end lost the second set 11 – 25.  The third set would decide the winner of the game!  The Eagles won the coin toss and elected to serve first.  The game when back and forth, back and forth and was a real nail bitter.  Unfortunately, the Patriots scored two more points than the Eagles wining the third set 16 – 14, and giving them the victory.

Yesterday the Eagle’s played their second game of the week against the Cedar Valley Huskies.  The Eagles started off slow, but towards the end of the first set the girls got their energy back and focused on playing as a team.  Thanks to Amala Akabogu’s strong serves along with Jaclyn Pitcher setting her teammates up for hits (spikes) the girls battled back to make it a very close set.  In the end the Eagles fell short and lost the set 23 – 25.

The second set proved just as intense with numerous lead changes, but the Eagles never gave up.  Due to some awesome teamwork and communication on the court the girls tied up the score 24 – 24 late in the second set.  Kalin Rotzoll had two successful serves in a row to help lead her team to a 26 – 24 win over the Huskies.  With the match being tied, the girls needed to play a third set to determine the winner.  The Eagles won the coin toss and elected to serve first.  The Huskies quickly won the volley and took the lead.  Again our girls fought hard, but it just wasn’t enough.  The Huskies won the third set 15 – 9, and took the match.  Thanks again to HCS students, faculty, and parents who came out to support the team!

FIERCE BATTLE ENDS IN THIRD GAME WIN

7/8th Volleyball

The 7/8th team also had tough competition on Tuesday night when they faced the Patriots. The Eagles had a slow start with the first match going to the Patriots with a score of 12-25. The second match the Eagles came out strong and quickly brought the score to 25-14 to force a third match. The last match the Eagles went on a scoring spree to take their score from 8 points to 15 and end with a final score of 15-7 to win the game. Way to Go Eagles!

VARSITY EAGLES REMAIN UNDEFEATED

7/8th Soccer

Finding themselves down 0-1 at the half, the Heritage Varsity Soccer team rallied to tie early in the second half off a tremendous cross by Max Miller to Hunter Schau.  After another INCA score the Eagles tied the game up again on a successful penalty kick converted by Caden Turnbough.  Heritage took the lead late in the game off of another set piece when Caden Turnbough drove a free kick into the box only to be cleared off an INCA defender for an own goal (sometimes you take goals any way you can get them).  While seemingly on the way to their fourth straight win, Heritage gave up a goal in the waning moments of the game and the game finished in a 3-3 tie.  While falling short of the win, the Eagles remain undefeated this year at 3-2-0 and will play their final game – a rematch against INCA – next Thursday at the Tuma Soccer Complex. Come out and watch our final game of the season and see if Heritage can complete a second successive undefeated season. A huge thank you to all the parents, students, alumni, and fans who made their way to Hiawatha for the game. It was a great fall evening of soccer and we thank you for your support.

5/6th HCS EAGLES HOLD OFF PATRIOTS

5/6th Soccer

Thursday afternoon was a beautiful fall afternoon for some soccer at Tuma Fields in Cedar Rapids.  The Heritage Eagles took advantage of the great weather and field conditions to roll past the Isaac Newton Christian Academy Patriots, 4-2. Hunter Schau led the Eagles with two goals. Maxx Miller and Adu Habte each had a goal of their own to round out the scoring. The Eagles defensive back line played well all game, helping first half goalie, Corey Holman keep the Patriots out of the net on all but one of their shots on goal. Andrew Stultz came in at goal for the 2nd half and held up the great goalie play Holman started. INCA had a few shots on goal and only got one by Stultz. The win propelled the Eagles to a 4-0-1 record going into the last game of the season Thursday, Oct 8th against INCA once again. Come out and support your undefeated Eagles next Thursday at the Tuma Fields. A huge ‘THANKS” to all the support from the parents and HCS staff!  It means so much to the players!

SERVING BATTLE ENDED IN A TOUGH TWO SET LOSS FOR THE 5/6th EAGLES

5/6th Volleyball

Yesterday (9/10) the 5/6th grade volleyball team played their second match of the year.  The Eagles gave a valiant effort but fell a little short, losing to the Isaac Newton Patriots in 2 sets.  The Patriots won the opening coin toss and elected to serve first.  The Eagles quickly found themselves in a hole due to outstanding serving by the Patriots.  The girls fought hard, and did so in a way that showed courage and perseverance.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and the Eagles lost their first set 12-25.

It appeared the Eagles had turned their game up a notch at the beginning of the second set, with Kalin Rotzoll and Amala Akabogu’s serving the Eagles to a quick 8-0 lead.  The Patriots battled back, resulting in numerous lead changes.  New comers Kufre Ituk and Aubrey Miller stepped up their game in this set and helped the Eagles to continue playing strong. In the end the Patriots pulled ahead to win the set 25-21.  Thanks so much to our Heritage fans (especially HCS Faculty) that made the trip to Cedar Rapids, it meant A LOT to the girls and was much appreciated!

5/6th EAGLES REBOUND FOR THE WIN

5/6th Volleyball

The Heritage Eagles 5th/6th grade volleyball team flew past the Cedar Valley Huskies to win their first volleyball match of the year. About half way through the first set, the girls found themselves behind the Huskies when Coach Pitcher called a time out. Coach Pitcher really encouraged the girls to focus on moving to the ball and following through with the skills they had learned during practice. Thanks to encouragement from veteran players Jaclyn Pitcher and Ella Hochstetler along with a few stellar serves by Amala Akabogu and Kalin Rotzoll the Eagles rebounded to a 25-20 win.

The second set was just as competitive with the lead changing back and forth between the two teams. Serving again proved to be the game changer in this set with Kalin Rotzoll, Jaclyn Pitcher, Amala Akabogu and Lydia Jumper serving up an impressive 14 aces to lead the Eagles to another 25-20 victory over the Huskies. Way to go Eagles! The girls’ next game is Thursday 9/10 at Isaac Newton Christian Academy.

VARSITY EAGLES STAND FIRM AGAINST TRINITY

7/8th Soccer

In what may have been the most competitive game of the past two years Heritage Christian School’s Varsity Soccer Team played to a tough 2-2 draw against Trinity Lutheran. Maxx Miller opened the scoring for the Eagles and Eli Young – assisted by Adu Habte – followed with a second shortly after to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead midway through the first half. Trinity fought back with two late first half goals to tie the game at 2-2 at the break. Defense ruled the second half with Caden Turnbough and Ebube Akabogu anchoring an outstanding defensive effort and AJ Coons had four second half saves (six overall) to keep the Trojans off the board. A furious Eagle offensive barrage in the last few minutes fell just short and a hard fought game ended in a 2-2 tie.
A huge thank you to the parents, teachers, and fans who made the trip down to south Iowa City for the game. The enthusiasm and energy was amazing and gave the kids a huge boost on a hot muggy afternoon. Thank you!
The Varsity Eagles are in action again on September 10 at 5:30 at the Kickers Soccer Park in Iowa City. Come out and join our raucous parents, students, and fans and cheer on your Eagles.
